The Issue:
Prior to the federal election in Jan. 2006, Canadians for Properly Built Homes (CPBH) received written promises from the Conservative Party of Canada, including the following paragraph:
“The Conservative Party of Canada believes that all homes built in Canada should be structurally sound and safe for their residents. The Federal Government does have a role to play in ensuring that homes built in Canada meet certain standards though the Canadian Commission on Building and Fire Codes. A Conservative government will enforce these standards and work with the provincial governments to ensure that all homes are safe, healthy, durable and energy efficient….”
Initially, CPBH was very pleased with this response from the Conservative Party of Canada. However, to the best of our knowledge (as of Nov. 16, 2007), the Harper government has done little, if anything, to fulfill the promise in the last sentence of the above paragraph. CPBH has sent a number of letters/e-mails to Prime Minister Harper and other key officials (such as Minister Solberg (minister responsible for CMHC and Minister Baird, Minister of the Environment) about this matter, but to date, no response has been received related to the above paragraph. This has been particularly surprising given that accountability has been a key part of the Harper Government’s platform!
Canadians for Properly Built Homes' Position:
Canadians for Properly Built Homes is calling on the Harper government to fulfill its pre-election promise in the above paragraph.
What can concerned citizens do?
- Write to Prime Minister Harper and request that he immediately take steps to ensure his government fulfills the promise in the above paragraph. Here is the Prime Minister’s contact information:
- By e-mail to pm@pm.gc.ca
- By Canada Post: Office of the Prime Minister, 80 Wellington Street, Ottawa, K1A 0A2
- By Fax: 613-941-6900
